Welcome to Heartwood Farm, home of Broadax Morgans
Located in the rolling hills of Allegany County in Western New York, we are a small farm that concentrates on producing one to two quality old type Morgans per year. Our mares were selected based on their breeding, conformaiton, and personalities.
Why do we choose to have Morgans? And Where did we come up with the farm name...the answer is easy. The heartwood of a tree is the oldest part of a tree, the foundation for all new growth to be built around. The same can be said for the noble Morgan, a breed that was built on one founding horse, Justin Morgan. They worked for settlers as they moved across the country pulling loads, serving as loyal mounts, helping to clear the land, and providing entertainment in various competitions. This leads to our Morgan prefix of Broadax. The Broadax was a tool that was used to cut and shape the trees that were used to build the homes of early settlers. Like the Morgan, it was a vital tool in the building of this great nation.
We want foals to be sound and strong in mind and body. They are given daily turn out time to run, play, roll and just learn to be a horse. They are handled daily and will see tractors, our small saw mill, log trucks and various other "spooky" things. The more that they experience in a safe and controlled environment the less they are afraid of in the future. While we are not a show barn, our first colt won the Morgan Stallion Class at the 2006 Cattaraugus County fair. It was his first time out, and he was not bothered by the sound system, carnival rides, or show noises that he was exposed to.
We welcome visitors by appointment.
